The 1853 Paulsen Reproduction chess pieces are named after Louis Paulsen (January 1833 to August 1891), who during the 1860s and 1870s was among the top five players in the world. Based on the traditional Staunton design, the pieces are handcrafted from solid ebony and boxwood. The king, standing 3.5 inches tall, along with all the other pieces, is painstakingly carved and finished to perfection. The bases (quite broad for this height) are then covered with billiard cloth so that your chess board will not be damaged during play.

To complement these historic chess pieces, we would recommend looking at boards from 20.9 inches with larger squares to accommodate the broader bases.
