The Isle of Lewis chess pieces need little introduction as one of the most iconic and famous sets of chess pieces. Discovered on the Isle of Lewis in 1831 when a sandbank collapsed and revealed a chest containing the pieces, they are said to date back to the 12th century and were likely crafted in Norway. Indeed, some people argue that the pieces should never have been named after the Isle of Lewis, since that was not where they were made. Arguments about the original pieces continue, mostly about where they should be exhibited.
