The king is the best example of this, differing from the queen by merely a small yet imposing crown.

The ebonized boxwood on the darker pieces is hand-polished to ensure a sharp finish, while the lighter pieces are carved from graded boxwood.

Chess boards of 18 inches (17.7 inches) or more are the best suited to accommodate these pieces. The Contemporary Series chess pieces sit definitively on large bases that are covered with protective felt. The 3.7-inch king covers 1.3 inches at its base.
