Isle of Lewis Chess Sets
In 1831, a coffin was discovered on the Isle of Lewis in Scotland. Inside this coffin were 78 chess pieces, hand carved from walrus ivory. The mystery of where these pieces came from or who made them continues today.
In 2007, there was controversy over where these chess pieces (that have been on display in Scotland and England) should ideally be kept. Well, while the world debates over who gets the originals, you can keep the replicas at your place!
The Regency Chess Company sells reproductions of the pieces displayed in the National Museum of Scotland. The reproductions are made of a crushed stone resin created with laser cutting from a mold of their museum based original. These authentic duplicates made in England can be yours to own through our online shop.
